Synopsis
A horror web series crew goes to an abandoned mental asylum for a live broadcast
They soon encounter much more than they bargained for as they delve into the depths of the nightmarish old building. The filmmakers couldn’t get permission from the South Korean government to film in a real hospital, so the Gonjiam scenes were shot at the National Maritime High School in Busan, and the production team strictly followed the hospital’s floor plan to recreate the exact same exterior. and hallways.
Literature Return to the Haunted House (2007)
As the group stands in front of the hospital, Charlotte keeps looking to the side. She’s obviously reacting because she smiles at whatever is happening. I’m always a little hesitant to watch found footage films with a haunted house/mental asylum narrative.
Honestly, this one is no different
They usually all follow the same formula and scare you almost completely. But of course I watched, because there was no doubt I wouldn’t. And while it’s similar to films like Grave Encounters (2011) and the like, it creates an impressive amount of tension and makes what you’re expecting seem fresh.
Seriously, there were a few moments where things were downright dire
The setup is simple, the production team goes to a supposedly haunted house for their reality show to capture live ghosts and break into a room (402) that’s locked and still inaccessible. The first 35 minutes are pretty introductory, but they do a great job of making you comfortable with the crew. Once you get to the shelter, things progress at a naturally steady pace, and in the last 20 minutes or so.
It might be in my top 10 of the year
This isn’t a film that does anything new or reinvents the Haunted Asylum; film, but what this South Korean film does is that you know what’s going to happen, so you don’t have to feel like it’s going to happen.
