The absurdist triptych of seemingly unrelated stories finds a mysterious intersection in this story set somewhere between Winnipeg and Tehran.. Canada’s official submission for the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025. From its cinematography and its usual search for symmetry, static or in traveling shots, and a pleasant aesthetic with a dreamy atmosphere that enhances the universality of the setting, to its story revolving around various characters, how their lives intersect and bring to life dialogue sometimes polite, other times not so much, the influence of Wes Anderson cuts through Matthew Rankin’s characterizations from beginning to end.
As in Anderson’s films, Rankin is interested in exploring the reality of his film, a reality full of idiosyncrasies that serve as fertile ground for comedy. An angry teacher in a classroom yelling at students, one of whom claims a turkey stole his glasses; another dressed as Groucho Marx because he wants to be a comedian; and another as a fashionista. With a comedy consisting of ironic, deadpan and black humor, Une langue universelle manages to be funny every time it wants to be.
There are many moments when events border on absurdism or surrealism, enhancing the comedy that bathes it, but never undermining its goal of thought-provoking depth. Elements and feelings that merge and give life to a special experience between places and times, realities and dreams. For example, in the reality of the film, even though we are in Canada, French, let alone English, seems like a second language, and in its place there is Persian.
Everyone speaks it and signs and billboards are written in it, presenting its result as something close but distant, familiar and unfamiliar mixed in a culturally and demographically blind new reality. In terms of cinematography, which in many ways resembles Anderson’s, more in framing and movement than in color palette, there is a constant will to inhabit the spaces in which the characters find themselves. It is as if the place is as important as the characters to the telling of the story, and Rankin wants to make sure we immerse ourselves in it like tourists from a foreign land.

After being released from prison after 25 years, New York City mob boss Dwight “The General” Manfredi is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma.. Dwight “The General” Manfredi: I don’t really go to church.. The opening sequence shows various photographic and painted views, as well as Oklahoma landmarks, superimposed on the New York City landscape: A statue of the Sioux Indian chief “Touch the Clouds” wearing a war bonnet and a necklace (breastplate) of bones, placed atop the Brooklyn Bridge A statue of a gold digger placed atop the Statue of Liberty Route 66 Western Gateway Arch, placed on a major Manhattan “avenue”.
In New York City, in the Manhattan borough, these are several numbered "Avenues" which are intersected by streets with lower numbers.. I thought this would be a fun show. We’ve come to think that anything with Stallone these days would be a comedy, and Tulsa King does indeed feature a fair amount of humor.
But Taylor Sheridan isn’t going to create a simple parody of a mob story and use Stallone as a joke and a kick-start to a new city after a long prison sentence. Comedy ensues as a New York mobster finds his way through Tulsa to establish his turf using his "old world" ways. While it’s not uncommon to root for a "bad" guy as the main character, his straightforwardness and old world common sense values appeal to those of us looking for something refreshing amidst today’s social nonsense.
The irony of the message is that it takes a thug who bows down to no one to break down and expose shallow social hypocrisy. It’s the same formula that made Yellowstone such a success, and Sheridan knows that’s what many of us want. Before he became a caricature in his later roles that swamped the Rocky and Rambo franchises, his acting chops and screen presence created those iconic roles.
It’s great to see him back on screen in a role that seems perfect for him, and to use some of that brash personality to add depth to his character and the show, rather than undermine it. Season 5, Part 2, "Squid Game" Season 2 and more of the most anticipated new and returning series coming to TV and streaming.
