Synopsis
Four turbulent decades during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The real Dolours Price was married to Irish actor Stephen Rea for two decades (1983-2003). During that time, Rea appeared in the film for which she is probably best known in the US: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game. In that film, Rea plays Fergus, an extremely unruly and ambivalent member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).

Like ‘Say Nothing’, Episode 1; (UK release 2024; 9 episodes, 41-50 minutes each) opens with ‘Belfast 1972’; and we are reminded that this is ‘based on a true story’. A woman is abducted from her home, leaving her child behind. Then it’s on to ‘Dublin, Ireland, 29 years later’ and we’ll meet. Dolours Award.

He is being interviewed as part of an oral history of the Troubles. A few comments: There have been many films, TV series and documentaries about the Troubles, but I can’t remember ever seeing anything quite like Say Nothing. Bring 3 decades of what were Troubles with a fresh look. The series follows several events and jumps back and forth in time, but in some ways brings out the main themes of the Troubles more clearly than ever before.
Warning: This miniseries is not for the faint of heart
While the differences and struggles between Protestants/British Army and Catholics/Irish obviously get a lot of attention, less obvious things like the missing IRA are also included. There are many solid performances, most notably Lola Petticrew as Dolours. By the end I felt like I had been given an emotional inside. This miniseries is gripping from start to finish, even if some moments are uncomfortable.
I recommend you check it out and draw your own conclusions
(As an aside, a few minutes after watching episode 1 I realized I needed English subtitles because I was missing about half of what I was hearing (Northern Irish accents and such…) Say Nothing started streaming on Hulu. A week ago I read a positive review of it on New York Times and then found out it currently has a 91 percent certificate on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason I watched three episodes tonight and was simply blown away.
